As part of Harmony Week celebrations, the City of Burnside is showcasing the rich diversity of flavours in the community and are asking everyone to share their stories about how they bring their families and friends together with food to celebrate their cultural heritage.

Pierogi with cheese and bacon filing, baked with sauerkraut, tomato and cheese on top. This is a traditional Polish dish, served at Christmas, Easter and Birthdays.

Colivà is a wheat-based pudding with boiled grains, sultanas, lemon and orange zest. This dish is shared to remember the dead. Everybody loves it and remembers the loved ones that have passed away.

The classic Greek Salad is simple and appeals to many: roughly chopped tomatoes, onions, cucumber with olives, fetta and olive oil. This dish is so simple yet has universal appeal. Its Mediterranean origins fit beautifully with Adelaide's climate and maintains the importance of Greek culture in our remarkable shared heritage.
A carrot, cheese (vegan cheese) nutmeat loaf that is perfect as the centre piece with roasted vegetables. It can be spruced up for Christmas and birthdays etc with pineapple and cherries. I discovered this recipe 50+ years ago in my hippie days as a special vegetarian meal. It became my daughter's favourite and over the years as our family culture changed to incorporate veganism into our lives, the recipe adapted. It is still wanted as the centre piece for our shared meals for special occasions!

A really famous Pakistani dish, full of aromatic flavours. All of the neighbours love it whenever I cook and share with them.

Long pasta with warm red sauce and when you eat it your tummy is happy!

It is a rice made with coconut milk, anchovies, and egg. It is a fusion of food from all main community in Malaysia.

Steamed buns with filling such as pork, vegetable or red bean (the most popular) or eggplant like in Beijing... and others! People eat it for breakfast and sometimes lunch so I think it brings the family together in the mornings and it also tastes very homey because my mother sometimes makes it for us.

This dish gives me a taste of home. The chicken is nicely seasoned and steamed. When eaten with the soup it is the best! Personally, my family eats this dish on festival such as Chinese New Year.

Tasty beef dish cooked to perfection for three hours in fresh coconut milk and cream and Indonesian spices - yummo-licious - satisfaction guaranteed! Typically, the Beef Rendang is served during significant occasions, such as the end of Ramadan, weddings, birthdays, official events, home parties in the Indonesian culture. I would have it every other day because it is soo good, have a go!

It celebrates my children's culture who are adopted from Thailand.

San Choy Bao is meat and veggies cooked in a pan with delicious sauces and served in lettuce leaf cups. We all have to dip into the centre bowl for the filling of our lettuce cups. It is one of the few successful ways to get my son to eat veggies and he and we all love it.

It basically has the dumpling skin and filled with the flavour you want, like pork and chives, sugar and beef and celery. In China dumplings are usually celebrated at events. Dumplings are a main part of the Chinese dish, we would have sugar fillings sometimes, it brings good luck.

Sausage roll is a roll and there is sausage in it. I eat it at New Year's.

Pasta, particularly pasta with red sauce and meat. Made with love, our pasta sauce recipe has been passed down through generations. My Nonna taught my dad and dad taught me. It is delicious and now my kids enjoy it too. It is a dish we share at every family meal when extended family visit.

We have to cook Basmati rice, salt and milk together. Need to have a chopped onion with chilli powder together. As Sri Lankans we prepared this in every special moment to celebrate. People love this taste.

I know it sounds basic but I absolutely love my grandma's dumplings. She sold them when she lived as a single mother in Shanghai to raise money for my mum's education. We all make them together, my grandma, mum, sisters, my dad and I. My grandma says she loves making them now that there is no pressure for money. I've made them with my friends and will definitely pass it on to my kids in the future. We've changed the recipe to fit our Aussie taste buds!

Is a flavourful dish made with rice, tomatoes, onions, bell peppers, and a blend of spices. It is usually served with salad. It unites us through celebrations like weddings, birthdays and festivals. It reminds those abroad of home. It is gaining global recognition, introducing our culture to the world.

Vegetables, meat, fish balls, etc. in a large pot with lots of different flavours. Families and friends enjoy having this together as it is casual, easy to make but also ensures a warm atmosphere.

It is a rounded and slightly thick dish made of pre-cooked corn flour originally from South America, prepared event since pre-Columbus time. While some are preparing a mass with the flour, others area making fire and warming up the surface. Once the mass is ready, each person takes a bit of mass to prepare the arepa. It can be eaten by itself or usually stuffed with your favourite filling.
