To help increase canopy cover for our community, from 15 April 2024 to 30 September 2024 the City of Burnside are presenting residents with a green thumb a free native tree to plant on their property. All you need is a shovel, some water and some sunshine to help increase canopy cover throughout the City of Burnside and enjoy an amazing free native tree in your own garden. Together we can help sustain the City of Burnside’s Tree Cities of the World recognition status.

Conditions

  • Redeemable 15 April 2024 – 30 September 2024, from Adelaide Advanced Trees, 264 Cherry Gardens Road, Cherry Gardens.
  • Maximum value of $75 inclusive of GST.
  • Limit of one tree per voucher.
  • Council reserves the right to inspect the planted tree at the nominated address.
  • The tree must be planted at the nominated address and on private property.

The species selected will be based on the following criteria to the satisfaction of the nursery staff. The tree purchased must:

  • be native to Australia;
  • have a minimum height of 5 metres at maturity (as recognised by the nursery industry);
  • have a life expectancy of more than 20 years;
  • have a minimum pot size of 150 mm.

The following species are excluded and cannot be claimed through the Native Tree Giveaway Program:

  • All Syzygium species
  • Xanthorrhoea or other Grass Trees
  • Palm trees

The following voucher limits apply, per calendar year:

  • Residential ratepayers located in suburbs identified as having low tree canopy coverage which includes Erindale, Tusmore, Rose Park, Glenunga, Kensington Park, Dulwich, Linden Park, Frewville, Beulah Park, Magill, Glenside, Rosslyn Park, Eastwood – two vouchers;
  • Residential ratepayers located in the remaining suburbs – one voucher;
  • Residential body corporates – one voucher per unit/residence;
  • Schools located within the City of Burnside – three vouchers;
  • Community groups or organisations within the City of Burnside – two vouchers;
  • Clubs/groups based on Council leased land (subject to lease arrangements) – two vouchers. 

Tree planting tips

The long-term success of your new tree is greatly impacted by the care taken during the planting process. Here are some tips to help establish your new tree, and provide you with a positive return on your time and investment.

  • Ensure you have located all underground utilities before planting.
  • Prepare the site for planting by digging a hole wide and shallow, two to three times wider than the root ball, and no deeper than the root ball. The hole should be in the shape of a wok to give new roots room to grow.
  • Place the tree gently into the hole ensuring it is straight and the top of the root ball is level or slightly higher than the surrounding soil levels.
  • Gently back fill the hole with the existing soil, breaking up clumps and adding organic matter (well-rotted compost) if required. Backfill the hole until it is level with the top of the root ball.
  • Finally water your new tree and enjoy it for years to come!
