At the City of Burnside we value our trees highly. Trees are important for a variety of environmental, social and economic reasons. They add character to our landscape, preserve biodiversity, and provide shade, shelter and habitat for fauna.

What you need to know about trees in Burnside

The City of Burnside is committed to maintaining, enhancing and developing our trees, and ensuring the life and safety of our trees is a priority. Burnside is synonymous with wide, tree-lined avenues which increase property values.

For every tonne of timber formed in trees, one and a half tonnes of carbon dioxide is absorbed and one tonne of oxygen released into the atmosphere. By removing trees we are robbing our air of oxygen. Humans can go five weeks without food, five days without water, but only five minutes without oxygen.

An interactive website has been developed to provide the community with access to information on our amazing trees. The City of Burnside recognises the value our community places on trees, and takes pride in the management of over 40,000 trees in our streets and major parks!

The City of Burnside is developing volunteer opportunities for residents to learn about and participate in urban forest activities.

Urban Tree Strategy

The Urban Tree Strategy provides the foundation of how Council will continue to enrich and enliven our neighbourhood character and amenity through the continued management of our most valuable assets now and for future generations.

Guidelines for Protecting Trees During Development

Any tree damaging activity associated with Council or privately owned trees which are deemed regulated require Council approval.

Managing Trees Around Powerlines

There are risks associated with trees in relation to their proximity to powerlines.

Tree Assistance Fund

The City of Burnside is renowned for its landscape of significant trees, and as such, commencing the financial year 2012/13 the Council has resolved to set aside funds for the operation of the Regulated and Significant Tree Assistance Scheme.

Tree Canopy Report

Council has endorsed the Urban Tree Canopy Coverage report by Seed Consulting undertaken in 2016.

Hazelwood Park Tree Assessment

At the City of Burnside we love trees. Trees provide a range of benefits such as removing air pollutants, producing oxygen and storing carbon. These ecosystem services can be measured economically through a scientific peer reviewed software program used globally called i-Tree Eco.

Tree Stories

Trees are an integral part of the City of Burnside. The trees along our streets and in our reserves and gardens provide natural character and shape our experience of the area. Trees provide many benefits, from cooling the urban environment to providing habitat for wildlife. Trees can also inspire us and be part of memorable experiences.

Native Tree Giveaway

To help increase canopy cover for our community, from 15 April 2024 to 30 September 2024 the City of Burnside are presenting residents with a green thumb a free native tree to plant on their property.

Tree Vandalism

Council is committed to protecting the Urban Forest and holding those responsible for vandalism accountable to the full extent of the law. In the past, Council has successfully prosecuted for damage to trees.
