Media Response - Roof painting service signage
Published on 23 January 2025
Response to The Advertiser.
The journalist was investigating public signage advertising roof painting services, and whether the City of Burnside had been impacted and had removed similar signs, asking the following questions:
- How many of these adverts has council taken down and how quickly are they popping up? How much does this cost council in staff hours/resources?
- When did they start popping up?
- Has council received complaints about these adverts or the business? And does council know if this is a legitimate business?
- Has the council contacted the business and asked them to take the posters down?
- And has council taken any action against the business?
- What are the rules/bylaws around putting up advertisements on streets, signs, poles, etc? And what issues do the adverts pose?

The City of Burnside has previously been made aware of unauthorised signs advertising residential trade services, including roof painting, displayed in various parks and on roads across the Council area. This occurred most recently in September/October 2024, with over 20 signs removed by the City of Burnside.
This is not an ongoing or prevalent issue for the City of Burnside and occurs only sporadically. We strongly urge all residents to stay vigilant when engaging with private trade service providers and to compare options to ensure reliable service.
Any unauthorised advertising displayed in our parks, reserves and on roads has been and will continue to be removed by our team. The City of Burnside’s By-Law No 3 – Local Government Land states that: A person must not on any local government land, without the permission of the Council: display any sign for the purpose of commercial advertising other than a moveable sign which is displayed in accordance with the Moveable Signs By-law 2018”. Under By-Law No 4 – Roads, the same restriction applies to roads.
We ask residents to report any unauthorised signage to us.
