Pirkurna Wirra/Peter Bennett Organic Community Garden

An open Community Garden, opposite Tregenza Oval in the heart of the City of Burnside, for people of all ages to enjoy with a focus on organic gardening principles.

Everyone is welcome to gather, grow food, share the produce, and learn together in the Community Garden.

History

Officially opened on 2 December 2021, the Laurel Avenue Pirkuna Wirra/Peter Bennett Organic Community Garden is located on the site of an ancient creek that ran through the traditional lands of the Kaurna people. The name, Pirkurna Wirra was given by the Kaurna Warra Karrpanthi, the leading group for revitalising the Kaurna language.

'Pirkurna' refers to groups and communities, and 'Wirra' means a forest of trees and garden. The name acknowledges the Traditional Custodians and Elders of the land, and celebrates the continuity of the cultural, spiritual and educational practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The garden also commemorates organic gardening pioneer, the late Peter Bennett. Peter promoted organic gardening and farming practices via his best selling book Organic Gardening and made numerous contributions to newspapers, radio and television programs. For over 30 years, Peter and his wife Sandra had an organic garden shop in Glenside and offered organic gardening courses twice a year for 26 years in the Linden Park School Hall. Peter also helped establish community gardens for Indigenous communities at Regency Park and near Ceduna.

The garden is a community initiative overseen by the Linden Park Community Garden Association Inc. with support from City of Burnside. With thanks to the Rotary Club of Burnside who have played an integral role in the launch of the garden, with many hours and resources contributed to create a vibrant and thriving garden community.
