Census 2021

The 2021 Census was held on 10 August 2021 at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. With interstate and overseas travel at an all-time low, most residents were at home, which offered a unique opportunity to obtain a baseline profile of the Burnside Community.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) released the first round of Census data on 28 June 2022, and since this time, Council’s demographic data consultant, .id have been busy updating Burnside’s Community Profile.

Community Profile and Population Forecasts

The City of Burnside’s Community Profile, Social Atlas and Population Forecast tools provides detailed demographic information for areas of Burnside using Census information from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and then using the data to determine forecasts for the City.

Understanding the demographic make-up of our City enables us to better identify community needs and to then plan and provide services designed to meet those needs. These tools are ideal for use by the Council, students, community groups and businesses interested in learning more about our City and the local community.

Information provided in these tools includes details of how many people live in the City of Burnside, the characteristics of our City's population (e.g. birthplace, languages, religion), what we do for a living and how we live (e.g. dwelling type, household size, number of cars we own, etc.) as well as how many people are likely to be living in the City of Burnside in 5, 10 or 20 years.

Community Profile - Population and Demographic Profile

The City of Burnside Community Profile presents the population characteristics of the Burnside community, how they have changed over time and how they compare to other areas.

The profile presents data from 2021, 2016, 2011, 2006, 2001, 1996 and 1991 Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Census of Population and Housing for the local government area, and for smaller areas within it (e.g. suburbs). This data is presented in easy to use tables, charts and commentary to answer the majority of frequently asked socio-demographic questions.

Social Atlas

The City of Burnside Social Atlas presents key socio-demographic characteristics for the area in a series of interactive maps. Based on data from the 2016 Census of Population and Housing (Australian Bureau of Statistics), each map is prepared to help identify spatial patterns and trends in the area.

Population Forecast

The City of Burnside Population Forecast is a comprehensive on-line demographic forecast. Population forecasts give an indication of future population outcomes. It provides forecasted figures on how many people are likely to be living in the City of Burnside in 5, 10, or 20 years.  It outlines local drivers of population change and forecasts how population, age structure and household types will change over the period 2016 to 2041. Information is delivered at small geographic areas (suburbs, grouping of suburbs and wards) and reflects different population outcomes across the City of Burnside.
