Media Response - Regal Theatre Precinct Redevelopment grant funding

Response to The Advertiser.

The journalist asked for comments about the $2.43m in grant funding announced for the Regal Theatre Precinct Redevelopment project from the Australian Government's Thriving Suburbs Program and in particular:

  • I've calculated the overall cost is just under $6m, adding together council's contribution and the grant - is that correct? Or are you seeking extra grant finding
  • From reading old stories, it looks like council took back control of the Regal in 2018 - is that correct?
  • Is it called the Regal Theatre or Chelsea Cinema now? When was that name change officially made?
  • I've got some fantastic looking artist impressions from the council's site - when were they released publicly? Just don't want to say they're new if they've been out for months
  • Can I please use the pic of the theatre on Facebook?

I've calculated the overall cost is just under $6m, adding together council's contribution and the grant - is that correct? Or are you seeking extra grant finding?

Council has not yet gone to market for construction, so the cost assessment has not been released to ensure a competitive tender process, and to gain the best value for money for our ratepayers. Council will seek extra funding.

From reading old stories, it looks like council took back control of the Regal in 2018 - is that correct?

The artists impressions as part of the Detailed Design document that can be found here https://engage.burnside.sa.gov.au/the-regal-theatre-draft-precinct-master-plan were released in September 2024.
